Back to School ... MARTHS!

It is suffering when it comes to studies and revision on Friday night for your exam! Not to mentioned that I have such huge urge to go window shopping and drinks at a nearby pub. I felt like it was ages since I down a pint of Hoergaarden and just get all sober. Worse is that, most of my friends and acquaintances seem to be out today, either drinking, socializing or just plain hanging out. I miss going out on Fridays and not worrying for weekend classes.

Usually the pain is less crucifying for other subjects but since it is business finance, the godly deemed most difficult subject ... its like a tradition that most of my peers start studying for weeks to get through the 3 hour examination period. With 15 minutes of reading time, things just gotten a lil scarier and worse. For me, I vow to start last monday and I did. The bad news is, I am still at the start after 5 days!!! It's like I never moved a single inch. Still the first few pages marked out of the 700 pages text book.

I am great at finding excuses to delay or rather not revise. It is not like I am some whiz kid in finance, so why bother the unconscious mind says. Notice the high expenditure, low return, stringent cash flows and probably silly risk I take in my daily expenditures - well - that is why I am pretty bad at this subject. With equal analysis and theory needed to compensate for calculation ... I am lost at the very first point of trying to write the first number.

Since high school, I was never good with formula. Worse with numbers, except for generic warehouse sale figure like 70% ... but that said, a table of breaking down the price range is still highly appreciated! Even the simplest equation can be magnified into echoes of headaches, stomach discomfort and major meltdown for me. Thus, my best defense mechanism kicks in - Procrastination! A trait learned from my previous relationship and I am already prepared for the worse case scenario ... resitting for the exam ~

Perhaps I should stop blogging and at least try my best to get some real work done. Ya?

Listening to the voice

The whole day it was raining. It was like dancing with tears in my eyes. On many occasions, it would have been a great morning to sleep in and just cuddle, but I sort of gotten used to the idea of waking early and start the day with milk, cereal and applying sun block before igniting the car engine. Long gone the days I sleep in to smell the wonderful scent of pillows.

Things have been quite weird lately. I've been thinking a lot about my future. I have grown so much in the past few years. As soon as I was in University, I dated, got attached, dumped and then got attached again. Met friends, some turned life time companions and some turned into family members, while some turned into complete strangers and some enemies. Put on some decent weight from gym, learned new languages and mastered new sports. Went to Melbourne, loved the life there but loved the person back then more and came back here. Been foolish and been wise at many intervals of road. Found interest in new hobby, abandoned some and one turned into a part time income generating business. Taste bud became more sensitive and in constant mode to adventurously seek for new good food places. Grew from being rebellious, impossible and childish to I dare say, mature, able to fend for my ownself and tasteful certain way.

That said, some things did not really change. For one... I am still as vain as ever. Loved shopping, action figures and dancing to silly love songs. Still listen to a wide degree of music from Pink's rock and roll to Enya's new age. That same trait applies to watching Disney cartoon to academy award winning movies. Still passionate and filled with surprises and pretty much a sunshine guy. Still tickled by Jazz, teddy bears and men who dresses superbly smart and often daydream to emotional chinese songs. Occasionally cook to feel good and ice cream still does the trick!

While washing the dishes after dinner, I thought that I must have my own place with someone I lov as I am about to venture into new stages of life. I want to be able to care, cook and shelter my dreams with another person. Sort of build a family around that fantasy. I reminisce the past of talking about having kids and how life can just simple if you want it. I admire my friends who had the courage to seek those in similar even when in doubt and in fear.

Then the business finance part kicked in. How to invest, save and plan to fight inflation. Commitment of some sort can give security, but then entrepreneurship will have to wait. Some has given me advise that full time jobs are not that bad and after long thoughts, I believe to certain degree yes. As when does opportunity knocks? Do you create them and seek them quickly to prevent a lose out in time?

As deep as my mind began to wander. I miss the good ol times of just being simply and not plan for my future. But facing decisions in life has been some very high learning curve for me to lunge forward. Moreover, it is inevitable

Just like a song, it has to be sang into music. Thus, it's time for me to sing my song in my own voice into the music I lived for.

Ethics problem in Finance

I am going to copy and paste notes from my finance lecture notes. So ... here goes

Maximising shareholder wealth, or the share price, involves carefully evaluating each decision’s impact on cash flow amount, timing and risk. However, that statement includes nothing that directly incorporates the ethical aspects of decisions. The phrase “subject to ethical constraints” implies that there are ethical facets of business decisions that may or may not be a significant part of a decision’s cash flow projections. Think of all decisions being shifted through an “ethical funnel” – some decisions are unethical and do not make it through the funnel, while others are ethical and pass through the funnel. Examples of ethical considerations that might enter into decisions include not exaggerating product quality or durability, correcting environmental problems even though regulators or the general public would never know about then, and not exaggerating future cash flow projections in order to get a lower interest rate on a bank loan or bond issue. Each of these examples may decrease the size and delay the timing of cash inflows, or increase the riskiness of future cash flows – thereby reducing the share price relative to what it could have been had one acted unethically. No doubt you have thought of other examples as well.

Interesting it may seem. That is probably 2% of the test ... I need my lucks. Sob Sob

Fah Lanna Massage Chiang Mai

Located in the city of Chiang Mai, this massage parlor is gay friendly and offer massages from male or female masseurs. I tried their aromatherapy massage + thai massage which only cost about 750baht for 2 hours.

Their extensive list of service and packages can be found at their website click here

The journey starts with a nice foot bath, massage and scrub. Then you can choose your choice of aromatherapy oil from 7-9 choices. Some on the list I remembered are lavender, sandalwood, relaxation and many others. Serving of lemongrass tea is also a practice. I preferred the iced ones thou ~

Fah Lanna ambiance is very typical thai-bali style. Dimly lit for the feel and cosy. With just 4 rooms for massages, and 4 foot massage seats, do call and make bookings. Many could be on waiting list. Do not expect high-end decorations as they are quite simple decorated and have space constrain. If you are claustrophobic, best avoid the place.

They also play superb relaxation music through out. At the right pace and tune, it will lullaby you to dream land. The aromatherapy will also fill the rooms and since they are quite small, you might find yourself banging into corridors if you are not too careful.

The outcome is wonderful as my masseur is very experience and knows how to avoid certain areas which made me uncomfortable. Fah Lanna is highly recommended by tripadvisor. I think from my perspective, the price is really affordable and the whole package is worth the try.

Chiang Mai 2011

Walking down the streets of Chiang Mai, to be exact Tapae Road, I find it interesting that there are more foreigners than locals. The locals are also different from the usual Bangkok features as Chiang Maiers are lighter in skin tone and have strong features of Chinese decedents. You would not be able to differentiate some of the locals with Chinese Malaysians. Chiang Mai also very famously known as a holy place (think of Bali in Indonesia) has heaps of temples built decades and some perhaps centuries ago. A place of peace, I was able to really just sit back and enjoy visiting temples.

So I am going to break my post into a few categories; starting with this one – my experience overall in the trip. Then I am going to review 3 places in my next few post …

Temples

One of the main objective I am in Chiang Mai is to visit some of their famous temples. Apparently, you can get a few of them at just one street. Some of the notable ones I visited are:

Wat Pha Singh

1. One of the monk deceased body is still fresh and anew. Apparently, many high level monks bodies stay that way. FYI, that is not a Madame Tussaud’s work

Wat Pan Tao

1. One of the oldest temples still standing strong. The entire structure is made from timber

Wat Chedi Luang

1. The tallest and grandest monument still untouched and standing. A portion of the temple collapsed during earth quake and sadly, only a few of the structures remain visible.

2. Donation for dogs. Doggies here are very cute and do pose for a baht or two.

Doi Suthep

Cantik gila sial. Of course the entire structure is painted gold – not made from gold. The temple is generally commercialised when you notice there are donation box filled with notes at every corner. The place is swamped with tourist and I strongly think that you visit Doi Suthep mainly for its beautiful landmark and nothing strong in spiritual. Just sit back, enjoy the gold contrast against the blue sky and click away with your cam.

Advise – try not to take pictures of local kids dancing or singing or posing, you end up paying them “entertainment fee” unless you are prepared to hear a child cry in public.

Tapae gate and road – Sunday Night Market Bazaar

A strong recommendation from my visit is the Sunday night market at Tapae Road. The walk is one long stretch from Tapae gate (you should see Black Canyon Coffee) to one of the must visit temples – Wat Pha Singh. So be prepared with a comfortable walking shoe and lots of Baht …

It screams with vibrancy of culture. Because of that, thousands of visitors of both local and foreigners jam the road for local food, beverages, local design fashion wears, organic aromatic soaps and wash, hand-made souvenirs to performances of all age and groups. My favourite was of course the passion fruit blend that cost 20bath for a Venti (Starbucks) size because they absolutely do not add water! Pure juice with ice – refreshing and heavenly! Not to mentioned, the BBQ corn that I absolutely love. Long, Big and Thick with aromatic burnt butter roasting each kernel to perfection. Go figure eh!

One thing I clearly remember about the night market was the crickets they serve as “garnishing” for some local delicacies. Another amazing thing you will notice is also that most of the sellers are doing part time, students and old folks who just entertain passerby with music.

BTW, please skip the Night Bazaar – nothing interesting except if you are looking for local art piece, head straight to this building next to the Plaza at Changklan Road.

BhuBing Palace

Interesting that this is just a garden, on a hill and filled with flowers – this is the only attraction I actually paid to enter. If you are not a fan of the sun, come in the morning. If you are not a fan of flowers, don’t come at all!

Landscape pretty much require a bit of sun tan (scorching in Chiang Mai at certain period, please check your weather), shades or sunny, a fan, bottle of water will help and a decent pair of long pants and covered shirt. If you think covering with scarf over tank tops or straps, forget it! The palace has royalties visiting and if you are an avid visitor of Thailand, you will know how respectful their royalties are. Thai generally are relaxed and easy going, but when it comes to their icon and worship, try not to go against the rule. So, cover up girls … and guys.

Food

Food in the northern is also different. Apparently, they are famous for their curry – which I tried during my visit to Bhubing Palace. There are known as Khao Soi. Then there is my old-all time favourite, pork noodle or anything port for the matter of fact. Add it with a pinch of sugar, couple drops of fish oil and dry blended chilli … you get the umphh factor! Food prices in Chiang Mai are generally cheaper compared to Bangkok. At tourist area, I am taking about street food … you can get local Barley Yi Mai for 20baht, bowl of noodle around 25-35baht and for higher ends, you probably pay 2-3 times more of the street. If you really wanna “stinge” a couple of penny, adventurous trip down quiet and darker small alleys may get you a bowl of noodle at 10baht?

Of course one thing you cannot miss is their local coffee and tea, commonly known as Chai Yen (Ice Tea) Kafei Yen (Ice Coffee). You can basically get this anywhere with just 10-20baht, but if you are into wifi and sit back to relax like the average Starbuckers, you can try the local establishment Doi Tung founded by the Queen of Thailand to help the northern society. Think of it as a token for charity. Drinks generally ranges from around 60 baht to 120baht depending on what you ordered.

Massage and Spa!

If you ever go to Thailand, and miss this, Bugger you basically weren’t in Thailand at all! The only excuse for not going to one of the local massage is either you are injured or you hate people touching you. The massages are everywhere in CHX. You get them on the street, foot massages generally cost around 60baht for 30min, 100 baht for 60min. I meant there are really on the street, with stools and just an umbrella.

Then there are the mid ones, which I went for. Generally speaking massages can range from 200baht for traditional thai for 1 hour to 1300baht for a spa treatment that includes scrub, a massage and many others. Depending on which parlour you go to, you may even get to customise what you want, who you want, or even … how you want it. Giving a 10-20% tips to the masseur is a practise. In any event if you have gotten extra services, by that I meant any “extras” … you should rightfully give more. By the way, usually they do ask if you want them, like a 10min head massage :-P … if not … just politely say no and stick to the plan

Oh! One thing to look out for is also their oil massages. If you get to choose the oil you want, that is even more superb! This trip, I tried Thai massage, Oil Massage, Heat Oil Massage, Body Scrub and Milk Bath. To be honest, I loved it all.

Transportation

Because Chang Mai is fairly small. Most of the time, you can still travel by foot. If not, get a Song Tao, kinda like a mini bus-van type who will shutter you with a very small fee. They are usually red in color. Cabs are also available. Of course, if you can bargain a cheap ride, Tut Tut is kinda fun too.

The experience was unforgettably relaxing and fruitful. Love the boutique hotel and definite miss waking up to birds chirping. I am sure Mr Watch still gets that ... jealousnya!

Will miss Banthai Village lots

My Vday, Spore trip in Feb 2010

I am back from Singapore. Don't know why, I do not look forward for exam tomorrow, mainly because I was ill prepared. I merely flip through the presentation slides and honestly, have not really read any case studies or even note down the theories ... so I am screwed? or skewered? or both!

As I spent the past 5 minutes going through my camera roll on Binge, realizing that I have been slacking, enjoying a different view of Singapore and compromising my time to do my revision.
Regrets? Nope ... after the Exam result is announced? Probably.

Teddy and Chocolates for Valentine. Treat to myself for Vday!

DW treated me to Okonomiyaki! Yummy gila

Purba took me to an office building that looks like Batman building. This is the lobby! Awesome"ness" right ???

Pre Valentine?

It's been about 2 weeks since I have not written. Not the longest I would say but probably one of the few times where I felt that even pinning down my thoughts would not help me with issues. Many topics were flying across my mind, most of them worthy for post but I remember a close friend once told me that a balance in life is healthy. So, I've channeled certain ramblings and frustrations elsewhere thus sparing your raised eye brows going through my never ending complains.

It is amazing how sometimes you think negatively about life and how things are not going to get in your way but all of a sudden, you get blessings in disguise. Surprises.

Valentine is just around the corner. In the past years, I would have look forward thinking of where to eat, what to do, which shirt to wear and how the day will all end with wonderful sex in bed ... It has always been a romantic and wonderful day, every single year. Poems are exchange, reassurances are promised and love wishes lingers at the tip of the tongue every moment. In the midst of sensational debates over ban of such celebration, I actually think a ban on valentine is not that bad? Imagine flowers and gifts finally have no overprice tag on them and no ridiculous expensive meals. We can still go out, pretending it is another day? Rite?

So that aside, this year ... it was going to be filled with work, work and WORK. No more finding dates, no more dining but dressing up maybe la. After all, fashion has nothing to do with the Vday. So I thought, I would just pass the day just like any other. Quite capable of that

Then miraculously out of no where, I kinda celebrated pre-Valentine or how DW would put it ... with Mango Ice cream (gelato) and the simplicity of laughter, chats and observing people walking by. Time was slow again, I get to smell the roses, be my joyful self in discovering the hidden light and somehow I felt great. Thanks DW for making that difference!

So ... all is good this year. I did celebrate my Vday afterall :-)
